While many of the "copy and paste" variety of wrestling researchers say that the first tag team match occurred in 1901, "That's simply not true," states Rock Rims, a researcher and author on California pro wrestling history. "The first tag team match didn't take place until the 40s, and it wasn't in San Francisco," he says. "The first tag team bout in San Francisco didn't take place until 1947. " The first "World" tag team championship was also crowned in San Francisco in the early 1950s. Tag matches with three-man teams were developed, and in some territories, a championship division was instituted for these teams, but the concept failed to become widely popular; outside Mexico, multi-man tag matches are seen as a special attraction.
